This lovely suit carries the label "Frances Shop, South Bend" which appears to have been a good quality shop in Indiana in the 1940s.  The suit is in a medium-weight gaberdine like fabric in a pleasing chocolate brown.  Only the jacket is lined and this is in a toning crepe fabric.

THE JACKET : fastens at centre front waist with a large 1¼" plastic button.  There is an attractive decorative panel with scalloped edging across the front of each shoulder and this extends down to across the bottom front hips, where it forms two pockets.  The back waist has two loose open pleats to give more fullness to the shoulders.  There is no collar.  The jacket has large shoulder pads, and inside there are snaps/poppers which would once hold vanity straps in place.

THE SKIRT : has a 1" waistband and fastens at the left side seam with a 6" slit opening which fastens with 2 buttons and a metal popper.  The skirt has a large inverted kick pleat at centre front and there are stitched pin-tuck pleats at either side of centre front.

The suit is in Excellent condition with no flaws or faults.  I am not sure if all the buttons are original to the suit, there is a loose button in the pocket which is covered in the same fabric as the suit and is probably from the skirt judging from its size.
