vintage dress deep
peplum & sequins Bust 38" This lovely evening dress is from the late 1930s, maybe into the early 1940s. There are no makers tags, but the dress is clearly professionally made. There is a handwritten laundry label hand-sewn into the bodice back - and bearing the date 1940. The dress is in a black medium weight crepe-like fabric which has a good degree of movement.
The dress fastens at the left side seam with 13" metal zipper. Only
the bodice is lined, and it has 4 pieces of boning to give shape and
support. There are ½" wide straps. The flared
skirt has a lot of movement, and has a triangular godet fitted to the
right-side hemline. The highlight of the dress is the deep peplum,
which is scallop-edged. The peplum is permanently fixed at the right
side and across the back waist, but the left side is secured with small
metal poppers enabling access to the zipper. The peplum is lined and is
9" deep at the front, but extends to 20" deep at the centre back. The bodice and the peplum are decorated with black sequins along the
edges and in vertical stripes. Sadly, whilst most of the sequins are
still present there is a great number missing or loose and unravelling.
I feel the dress could be worn in its present condition, but would
benefit by having the sequins secured or replaced - however this fault
has affected the selling price for the dress. Other than the missing and loose sequins, the dress is in
Excellent condition.
