1950s De De Johnson zipper-front dress, Bust 36"
  • Bust = 36"
  • Waist = 28"
  •  Hips = 36"
  • Shoulder to hem = 46½"
  • Shoulder to waist = 17"
  • Skirt circumference at hem = 54"

The smart dress bears the label "De De Johnson Original, Made in California" and is unlined.  The fabric is a textured slubbed fabric rather like a medium-weight silk.

The dress fastens at centre front with a 17" long metal zipper which is nicely concealed with 2 folds of fabric, which continue along to form a small kick pleat at the front hem.  There is a V-neck line with collar and lapels and the back bodice has a deep V shaped yoke, showing a Western influence in the design.

The short sleeves have 1½" deep turn backs.  The original belt is present and is leather-backed - the belt is in the same fabric as the dress - the leather backing is split in a couple of places, and the fabric covering the buckle is frayed but is still functional.

Overall the dress is in Very Good - Excellent condition, but there is a 4" long length at the seam in the front kick pleat which needs restitching, albeit concealed.

This is quite a smart dress from a designer who belonged to the Californian group known as the Affiliated Fashionists, particularly known for their designs throughout the 1940s and 50s.
