Set of 4 x late Victorian child sewing
Samplers, family name DOOKS, 1885 - 20thC. This is a delightful set of FOUR sewing Samplers all from the same family, by the name of DOOKS, as follows : Sampler 1 : dated 1885 and worked by Edith A. Dooks aged 8. The Sampler is just under 12" x 8" in a close-weave canvas-like fabric and worked in coloured wool thread. It features the alphabet in upper & lower case letters, numbers and naive pictures of flowers and an unfinished house. Sampler 2 : dated 1886, worked by Sarah E. Dooks aged 8. The Sampler is 8" x 8½", in an open-weave canvas-like fabric and worked in coloured wool thread. It features the alphabet in upper & lower case letters, numbers, and naive pictures of dogs, trees and a crown. Sampler 3 : dated 1887, worked by Sarah E. Dooks aged 9. The Sampler is 12½" x 11", in an open-weave canvas-like fabric and worked in coloured wool thread. It features the alphabet in upper & lower case letters, numbers, and the Motto "Thy Will be Done". It has pictures of birds, crosses, a crown and a heart. Sampler 4 : undated, worked by Gertrude Dooks of Standard 4. I believe this to be early 20thC, it is worked on a finer open-weave canvas-like fabric using coloured wool threads, some of which have been random-dyed. The Sampler is just over 12½" x 10". It features the alphabet in upper & lower case letters, and Roman numerals. There are pictures of urns and two stags / reindeer / moose / elks (not sure which). All four Samplers are grubby and need cleaning. The Samplers from 1885 and 1886 have stains which I am advised (by a textile conservator) can be removed; they also have some period darns and missing letters. This is a delightful group of Samplers all from the same family and a good representation of the education of young girls of this period. Whilst not of the highest quality, once cleaned and framed, they will make a more than interesting display and discussion piece. |
