Mans Regency under-waistcoat vest c.1805/1810
Shoulder to hem = 16"
This is a fabulous and rare piece of mens clothing history dating
from the Regency period, c 1805 - 1810.
- This piece is an under-waistcoat or vest. It would be worn with a
larger plain waistcoat/vest over it, so only the decorative collar &
lapels are on show.
- The under-waistcoat is in a plain medium-weight cotton fabric, now
cream but probably originally white. The collar, lapels and the centre
front are in a decorative deep red fabric with a small floral design.
- It fastens at centre front with 5 small buttons, each covered in the
red fabric. The front is shaped at the hemline, going into a V-shape,
whilst the back hemline is straight.
- It is entirely hand-stitched. There appears to have been a period
alteration made at each front, with small gussets fitted probably for
ease of fit. Both gussets are frayed and show signs of darning/repairs.
There is also a small area at the inside back neck which has frayed and
shows signs of period repair.
- Overall, this item is in Excellent and strong condition considering
it is now passed its 200th year! - a rare survivor!
A fantastic and rare piece for the collector - and a more than
interesting decorative conversation piece! |
